Do you have a driveway, patio or walkway you installed with interlocking stone four or more years ago? Are you looking for some ideas to spruce it up and bring it back to life? Within the last few years a very popular trend has emerged. If you look at our most recent Unilock® catalog you will notice there are numerous photos of inspiring project ideas that include highlight courses, contrasting bands, eye popping inlays and dramatic soldier or sailor courses. Having these design features is a great way to incorporate your personal style and add diverse colors into your outdoor living space.
Another popular trend that I have seen more of lately is center pieces or feature areas. These design trends add vibrant and exciting components such as an 8 point compass, tribal sun/moon or area carpets.
Installing these latest design trends can really add to an older installation, making it look brand new. It can add the color and texture an older project needs to bring it new life. The good news is that adding to an existing landscape project is very easy! Add soldier or sailor courses by simply replacing older edge stones and relaying new ones. Choose pavers that provide dramatic texture and color. I recommend having multiple solider or sailor courses, this tends to really enhance the look, see below.
Inserting center pieces or focal points are easy too. With a soapstone marker draw the outline directly on the stones. Keep in mind that circles and curves are harder to cut so make them larger and not so tight. If you plan on doing this project yourself refer to our Technical Installation Guide. With Unilock’s wide variety of colors and textures to choose from you can really create a unique design that will be uniquely yours. A great tool on our website to help get your creative juices flowing, is our Uvision™ Selection option. Here you can mix and match all kinds of colors and textures to create the one for you.
